General

In the San Francisco Bay Area, do not leave any belongings in your car. Thieves target rental cars, out-of-state cars and cars with bags visible inside. While traveling here, take advantage of your hotel; they will safely store bags for you even before check-in and after check-out. If you must leave something in the car, conceal it in the glove compartment or trunk so it is not visible from the outside.

Getting to the University Club of San Francisco

  • Address: 800 Powell St, San Francisco, CA
  • It is at the northeast corner of Powell St and California St.
  • The exterior is entirely brick. Above the entrance, numerous flags are flying.

Getting there with public transportation

From hotels in Union Square: It’s less than a mile walk (up a hill). If you’d prefer to walk less, try the Powell cable car (both Powell lines work). Get off at Powell St & Sacramento St. Tickets are $8 per person.

From elsewhere in the Bay Area: Take BART to Powell, then take the cable car north to Powell St & Sacramento St.

Cable cars run until 10pm. BART runs until midnight. After 10pm, we suggest taking an Uber to your hotel or to BART.

Parking

Street parking is limited throughout the city of San Francisco.

Parking garages are readily available in the downtown area, though they usually charge a significant fee. You can search for these garages on Google Maps or SpotHero. The easiest to use and most affordable garages are those operated by the SFMTA, listed here.

The most affordable garage near the University Club is the SFMTA-operated St. Mary's Square Garage, which advertises a flat $6 weekend rate for up to 12 hours (must be out by midnight!). The weekend car entrance can be found by navigating to “631 California St” (street, not avenue!). From this garage to the venue is a ¼ mile walk at a 17% grade.

Getting to Bistro Boudin for brunch on Sunday

Boudin is a San Francisco bakery known for sourdough bread. They have an attached restaurant on the second floor, where we have booked a private room for brunch. Their address is 160 Jefferson St, San Francisco, CA.

Use the bakery’s main public entrance. Hanging from the ceiling is a “bistro” sign pointing east; follow that and ascend to the second floor.

Public transportation

From hotels in Union Square or from the University Club, take either Powell cable car line to its northern terminus (tickets $8), then walk ½ mile.

Parking

The restaurant offers validated parking for up to two hours in the lot on the north side of the building. Don’t leave anything inside your car.

What to do after brunch

Boudin is located in Fisherman’s Wharf, a very touristy area. Of its attractions, we most enjoy the hundreds of sea lions who sun themselves by Pier 39.

If you enjoy walks, try going 3 miles west along the waterfront to Crissy Field to gain a view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Your inner child may enjoy the Exploratorium at Pier 15, full of interactive science exhibits, located 1 mile east. It’s best to buy tickets ahead of time, because they may fill up.

If you need to get to the airport from brunch, we would recommend Uber.

Airports

SFO

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the closest and most convenient airport, located slightly outside the city. To get from SFO to the city, use BART, or a taxi or Uber will cost about $60.

AirTrain connects each terminal to the BART station at SFO. From there, board a San Francisco train.

While SFO has taxi stands at the curb, the Uber/Lyft pickup point is slightly harder to find. Arrivals at the domestic terminals (1, 2, 3) must walk to the central parking garage, then take the elevator up to level 5.

OAK

Flying into Oakland (OAK) is a viable alternative. For example, for those traveling from New York, Spirit has an EWR–OAK route, which is usually the cheapest direct flight available.

OAK is not recommended if you would like to rent a car from the airport. We understand there is a higher incidence of theft targeting car rentals in this area.

Instead, use BART to get from the Oakland airport to your hotel. A BART shuttle train connects the airport with the main BART line; then transfer to a train to San Francisco.

BART

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is the rapid transit/subway system serving the Bay Area.

How to pay? Two ways:
  • Clipper Card on your phone
  • Buy a ticket from the machines outside the platform
Important notes:
  • Tap in and tap out with the same card or ticket.
  • You need a separate ticket or card per person.

If you’re staying at the University Club or a Union Square hotel, get off at the Powell station in San Francisco.

Accommodations

We have blocked a limited number of hotel rooms at the University Club, our venue. This is the most convenient option, as you would not have to worry about travel to or from the event on Saturday. For details on the accommodations, see the Club’s webpage. The Club is a historic building, so the rooms come with both the charm and the quirks of staying in an old building.

To book a room at the University Club, contact reservations@uclubsf.org or call (415) 781-0900. Our room block gives you a two-night stay from Friday to Sunday. Extended stays may be available. Rooms are available from $215 + tax per night, which is a competitive rate.

If staying at the University Club is not for you, we would recommend you book a hotel in the Union Square neighborhood of SF, which is nearby the venue. For a fun option, try Hotel Triton—each room there is themed.
